“Class of Nuke ‘Em High” is a wild and wacky film about a high school hit by a nuclear power plant meltdown. The students are mutated into bizarre creatures with superhuman powers, causing chaos and mayhem in their once-normal lives. The movie is full of over-the-top humor, outrageous special effects, and plenty of carnage. It’s like “The Breakfast Club” meets “The Toxic Avenger,” with a healthy dose of B-movie insanity thrown in for good measure.

Review

Alas, dear readers! Prithee, lend an ear and hear a tale of nuclear waste and high school woes. Forsooth, it is none other than the movie “Class of Nuke ‘Em High!”

The tale unfoldeth thus: in Tromaville High School, miscreants abound. Amongst them are the Cretins, a band of ne’er-do-wells who sell drugs and cause chaos. Meanwhile, the Tromaville Nuclear Plant is disposing of their radioactive waste nearby, which has caused some…unintended side effects.

Enter Warren and Chrissy: two sweethearts who attend Tromaville High School, and unfortunately ingest some of that radioactive waste. As a result, they experience strange reactions (including glowing green!) and discover newfound abilities.

As they try to navigate their way through high school life with these new changes, they also find themselves at odds with the Cretins’ leader- a villainous character named Spike. Tensions rise as both sides vie for control over the school.

Whilst the plot may seem simple enough at first glance- it’s Shakespearean themes doth run deep! For example: ’tis a tale of young love versus old hatreds; battling for power within one’s own community; and ultimately- coming together to overcome external dangers.

But alas dear readers, not all is hunky-dory with “Class of Nuke ‘Em High.” Critics hast given it mixed reviews over time- some finding it to be an entertaining exploitation film whilst others found it crass and nonsensical.

Regardless of opinions held however- one must give credit where credit is due! The special effects for this 1986 film are particularly impressive considering the time period. The use of practical effects was prevalent throughout- including prosthetics which transformed characters into grotesque forms (due to their exposure from radiation).

The film also boasts an eclectic cast which includes the likes of Janelle Brady and Gil Brenton as our main protagonists, Robert Prichard as the menacing Spike, and of course- the legendary Lloyd Kaufman in a minor role.

Furthermore- “Class of Nuke ‘Em High” hast left its mark on pop culture. Indeed, it hath inspired a comic book series and was even remade in 2020 with a more modern touch (although purists may argue that nothing compares to the original).

In conclusion dear readers: whilst “Class of Nuke ‘Em High” may not be for everyone- tis an important piece of cinematic history nonetheless. It giveth us reflections on society’s issues whilst also providing plenty of laughs and thrills along the way. To quote one of its most iconic lines: “Welcome to Tromaville High School. An excellent place to get an education…if you live!”
