In a world where teenage girls were expected to be prim, proper, and pure, Maggie Carey’s “The To Do List” was a breath of fresh air. The coming-of-age film that premiered in 2013 follows Brandy Clark (Aubrey Plaza), a Type A overachiever who spends her summer creating a sexual to-do list before starting college.
The movie was set in 1993, a time before smartphones and social media where one would have to watch and re-watch a VHS tape for hours just to pick up some moves. The idea of creating such a list might seem comical today, but “The To Do List” captures the confusion and naivety of teenagers perfectly.
Plaza’s portrayal of Brandy as someone who is determined to learn about sex in the most regimented way possible is both hilarious and relatable. She delivers her lines with a deadpan expression that is typical of her style. However, it is her co-stars who steal the show with their wacky antics.
Rachel Bilson plays Brandy’s best friend Wendy who encourages her to complete as many tasks as possible without considering the consequences. Wendy has already had some experience in this area, so she ends up being the go-to person for advice when it comes to the more complicated tasks on Brandy’s list.
Johnny Simmons plays Cameron Mitchell, Brandy’s longtime crush who also happens to work at the local pool club where she has taken up employment for the summer. Cameron is sweet but clueless when it comes to Brandy’s advances. It’s not until towards the end of the movie that he finds out about his place on Brandy’s list which culminates in one of the funniest scenes of the movie.
Bill Hader plays Willy McKittrick, Brandy’s boss at the pool club who also happens to be an amateur musician. Willy provides some much-needed comic relief with his antics and off-the-cuff remarks. He is the perfect mentor for Brandy who is trying to navigate her way through this world of sex and relationships.
The movie has a great ensemble cast, all of whom bring their own unique style and humor to their roles. But it is Plaza’s performance that anchors the movie. Her character’s journey from being completely uninterested in sex to embracing it on her own terms is powerful and inspiring.
The film was shot in Boise, Idaho, which was a perfect location for recreating the ’90s vibe. The cinematography by Doug Emmett captures the essence of a small town with its warm colors and natural light. The music by Raney Shockne also contributes to the nostalgic feel of the movie.
“The To Do List” was an important movie for its time, breaking away from Hollywood’s usual portrayal of teenage girls as either ditzes or sex objects. Carey’s film gave young women agency over their own bodies and showed them that it’s okay to explore their sexuality without any shame or fear.
