Review

The sun blazed down on the small town of Spokane, Washington, as a group of middle-aged men gathered outside. They had something to prove, and it was no small feat. They had been playing the same game of tag for decades but this year was different. It was Jerry’s turn to be “it” and they were determined to finally catch him.

As I watched the movie “Tag,” directed by Jeff Tomsic and released in 2018, I couldn’t help but feel like I was watching a scene straight out of an Ernest Hemingway novel. There was something raw and intensely masculine about the film that reminded me of the Hemingway stories that I have come to love over the years.

The storyline follows a group of childhood friends who have been playing tag for 30 years. Each year in May, they gather together and spend the entire month trying to tag each other. The stakes are high this year as Jerry (Jeremy Renner), who has never been tagged before, is getting married and has announced that it will be his last game.

The plot thickens as the friends realize that they need to take drastic measures in order to finally tag Jerry. They infiltrate his workplace, dress up as old ladies, and even crash his wedding in their attempts to catch him.

But what really makes this movie special is not just the antics of middle-aged men trying to tag each other – it’s also about the power of friendship. Even when they’re not playing tag, these guys have each other’s backs in a way that is truly heartwarming.

The cast is superb with Ed Helms, Jon Hamm, Hannibal Buress, Jake Johnson and Isla Fisher rounding out the main players alongside Renner. Their chemistry is palpable on screen – you really believe that these guys have been friends for decades.

There are plenty of hilarious moments throughout “Tag,” but there are also some deeper themes at play. The movie touches on the idea of growing up and leaving childish things behind, but also on the importance of holding onto friendships and staying connected with the people who have known you the longest.

The score and popularity of “Tag” was also noteworthy. The film grossed over $77 million worldwide and garnered a solid 56% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The catchy soundtrack was also a hit, featuring songs from artists like Fitz and The Tantrums and Imagine Dragons.

Filming for “Tag” took place in Atlanta, Georgia, and the surrounding areas. The crew did an excellent job of capturing the beauty of the city while also highlighting its quirks and unique character.

In terms of awards, “Tag” was not a major contender but it did receive nominations for Best Comedic Performance at the MTV Movie & TV Awards as well as Best Comedy at the Critics’ Choice Awards.

One of my favorite scenes in the movie involves a high-speed chase through an office building. The camera work is fantastic as it follows each character throughout their individual journey – there’s even a shot where one character jumps out of a window with a giant stuffed panda.

Critics had varying opinions on “Tag,” with some calling it silly while others praised its heartwarming tone. Personally, I appreciated how the movie balanced humor with emotion, creating a story that felt both realistic and absurd at the same time.

The special effects in “Tag” were subtle but effective – little touches like text messages popping up on screen or thought bubbles appearing above characters’ heads added to the overall comedic effect without feeling forced or gimmicky.

The development of each character was also well-executed. As we learn more about their motivations for playing tag every year, we begin to understand what drives them to continue this tradition long into adulthood.

The dialogue is punchy and sarcastic, filled with clever one-liners that will have you laughing out loud. There’s also a fair amount of physical comedy, with characters falling down stairs or getting hit in the face with objects.

Overall, “Tag” is a fun and entertaining movie that will appeal to anyone who has ever had a close group of friends. It’s not Hemingway, but it doesn’t have to be – sometimes all you need is a good laugh and a reminder that the people we love will always be there for us, no matter how ridiculous our traditions may be.
