As I sit here pondering about the movie “Savages,” I can’t help but think of the profound wisdom of Maya Angelou. She once said, “I’ve learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.” And boy, did this movie make me feel all sorts of emotions.

Directed by Oliver Stone and released in 2012, “Savages” is a thrilling crime drama that keeps you on the edge of your seat from start to finish. Based on the novel by Don Winslow, it follows the story of two best friends Ben and Chon who run a lucrative marijuana business in Laguna Beach. Their idyllic life takes a turn for the worst when a ruthless Mexican drug cartel led by Elena attempts to take over their business.

The storyline is intense, almost disturbingly so, but it’s this rawness that makes it captivating. The tension between the two friends and their conflicting personalities is palpable throughout the film. Ben is a peaceful botanist who wants to use his profits to fund philanthropic projects in Africa while Chon is a hardened ex-soldier who isn’t afraid to get his hands dirty.

The plot thickens when Elena kidnaps their shared love interest Ophelia and demands they hand over their entire operation in exchange for her safe return. The trio then embarks on a dangerous mission to rescue Ophelia and take down Elena and her cartel.

The cast is impressive with Taylor Kitsch playing Chon, Aaron Taylor-Johnson as Ben, Blake Lively as Ophelia and Salma Hayek as Elena. Each actor delivers powerful performances with Hayek particularly standing out with her portrayal of a complex villainess.

One scene that stands out in particular is when Ben confronts Elena at her mansion. It’s an intense showdown between two powerful forces each trying to outmaneuver the other. The dialogue is sharp and witty, adding depth to both characters.
