Review
As a fan of the original R.I.P.D. movie, I was excited to hear about the upcoming sequel, R.I.P.D. 2: Rise of the Damned. The first film told the story of a police officer who died in the line of duty and was recruited by the Rest In Peace Department (R.I.P.D.) to track down and capture evil souls that had escaped judgement. It was a fun, action-packed adventure that left me wanting more.
The news about R.I.P.D. 2 has been trickling out slowly over the past few months, but what we know so far is intriguing. The plot seems to pick up where the first movie left off, with our heroes Nick Walker (Ryan Reynolds) and Roy Pulsipher (Jeff Bridges) continuing their work for the R.I.P.D. The difference this time around is that they’ll be facing off against a new kind of foe: damned souls.
According to reports, these dammed souls are more powerful than anything Nick and Roy have faced before, which means they’ll need some help if they’re going to save the world from destruction. Enter a new character played by Jessica Chastain, who is said to be an angel sent to aid our heroes in their quest.
The addition of Chastain to the cast is exciting news for fans of her work, and it’s always nice to see fresh faces in an established franchise. However, I’m most excited about seeing Reynolds and Bridges reprise their roles as Nick and Roy respectively. The chemistry between these two actors was a major highlight of the first movie, and I can’t wait to see them back in action together.
One thing that sets R.I.P.D. apart from other action movies is its unique premise. The idea of dead police officers working for an otherworldly department may sound strange on paper, but it worked surprisingly well in the first film. It’s a concept that lends itself well to creative action scenes and interesting character dynamics.
Speaking of characters, the first movie had a memorable cast of supporting players, including Mary-Louise Parker as Proctor, the boss of the R.I.P.D. It’s unclear if she’ll be returning for the sequel, but I hope so. Her scenes with Reynolds were some of the funniest in the first movie.
Of course, no movie is complete without a great score. The first R.I.P.D. had an energetic soundtrack that perfectly complemented the action on screen. Hopefully, we’ll get more of the same in R.I.P.D. 2.
As for popularity and critical acclaim, the first R.I.P.D. was not exactly a box office smash or a critical darling. However, it has gained somewhat of a cult following in the years since its release. It’s one of those movies that people either love or hate, but I happen to be firmly in the former camp.
Filming for R.I.P.D. 2 has yet to begin, so there are no set photos or behind-the-scenes tidbits to report on at this time. However, I have faith that director Robert Schwentke (who helmed the first movie) will deliver another visually stunning film.
In terms of evaluation and awards potential, it’s hard to say at this point whether R.I.P.D. 2 will be a critical darling or a commercial success. However, if it can capture even just some of the magic from its predecessor, I think audiences will be pleased.
The cinematography and special effects were some of the standout aspects of the first R.I.P.D., with plenty of imaginative visions of otherworldly landscapes and creatures. I’m excited to see what kind of fantastical visuals they come up with for the sequel.
One aspect that might be cause for concern is dialogue. While I enjoyed much of the banter between Reynolds and Bridges in the first movie, there were times when the script felt a bit clunky or trying too hard to be witty. Hopefully, the writers for R.I.P.D. 2 can strike a better balance between humor and exposition.
Another potential hurdle is criticism from fans of the comic book series that inspired the movie. While I haven’t read the comics myself, I know that some fans were disappointed with how much the movie diverged from the source material. It remains to be seen whether R.I.P.D. 2 will make any attempts to stay closer to its roots.
Production for R.I.P.D. 2 is expected to start soon, so it won’t be long before we get our first trailer and more concrete details about what’s in store for Nick, Roy, and Chastain’s character. Until then, I’ll be eagerly anticipating another thrilling adventure in the afterlife. As Roy would say: “Let’s saddle up and ride!”
