Only the Lonely – A Heartwarming Romantic Comedy

Remember those old-school romantic comedies where the leads meet under unusual circumstances, fall in love and overcome all odds? “Only the Lonely” is one such classic that tugs at your heartstrings. Director Chris Columbus’s touching story of a middle-aged bachelor’s search for love amidst his widowed mother’s disapproval is an underrated gem.

Released in 1991, Only the Lonely starred John Candy, Ally Sheedy, Maureen O’Hara and Anthony Quinn. It was one of John Candy’s last films before he died of a heart attack in 1994. While not a box-office smash, Only the Lonely won over audiences with its wit, warmth and sincerity.

The plot focuses on Danny Muldoon (John Candy), a Chicago cop who still lives with and takes care of his domineering Irish mother, Rose (Maureen O’Hara). Despite being in his forties, Danny has never been married and seems resigned to bachelorhood until he meets Theresa Luna (Ally Sheedy), a shy funeral home worker whose father happens to be a mortician.

Danny and Theresa’s first meeting is comical yet heartwarming as they bond over their respective jobs while picking up an old lady’s body. They hit it off immediately but soon realize that their lives may not align as they both have family obligations. Danny is torn between wanting to live independently with Theresa or staying with his mother who needs him.

Danny’s mother Rose is convinced that no woman will ever be good enough for her son. She worries about Danny leaving her alone like her late husband did. Maureen O’Hara delivers a brilliant performance as the stubborn matriarch who refuses to let go of her son-loving ways. Her sharp tongue provides plenty of biting humor throughout the film.

Anthony Quinn plays Nick Acropolis, Danny’s neighbor and longtime friend who owns a bar where Danny and Theresa hang out. Quinn’s character provides some much-needed levity and serves as a sounding board for Danny’s problems.

The film is filled with memorable scenes that are both poignant and hilarious. One of the highlights is when Danny takes Theresa to meet his mother, hoping to convince her that he has finally found the one. But Rose does not approve and proceeds to grill poor Theresa about her family background, job prospects, and even her estimated lifespan.

Another standout moment is when Danny serenades Theresa with his out-of-tune rendition of “Danny Boy” in an empty funeral home. It’s a touching scene that highlights Candy’s comedic talents while showcasing his character’s vulnerability.

Only the Lonely also boasts a fantastic soundtrack featuring classic songs from Elvis Presley, Van Morrison, Otis Redding, among others. The score adds emotional depth to the film, enhancing its romantic themes.

Despite its positive reception from audiences and critics alike, Only the Lonely was overlooked at the box office and awards season. It remains an underappreciated romantic comedy that deserves more recognition.

In conclusion, Only the Lonely is a heartwarming tale of love, family, and sacrifice. John Candy shines in one of his most endearing roles as a lovable cop torn between his duty to his mother and his desire for love. Ally Sheedy delivers a nuanced performance as Theresa Luna – shy yet determined to find happiness on her own terms. Maureen O’Hara steals every scene she’s in as Rose Muldoon – a tough Irishwoman whose motherly instincts hide her insecurities.

Chris Columbus directs with sensitivity and humor without resorting to cheap laughs or melodramatic twists. His portrayal of Chicago is authentic without being too gritty or romanticized.

Only The Lonely may not be as well-known as other romantic comedies like When Harry Met Sally or Sleepless in Seattle but it remains a delightful gem waiting to be rediscovered. It’s a film that will make you laugh, cry and believe in the power of love.
