Review

The dusty outback of Australia has long served as a backdrop for many westerns, but it has also served as the perfect canvas for a new kind of crime thriller. “Goldstone” is a movie that truly captures the spirit of the rugged wilderness that stretches across this land of mysteries and secrets. Much like Ernest Hemingway’s stories, “Goldstone” tells its story with an unflinching eye on the world; it is unapologetically brutal and real.

The storyline is set in the fictional Goldstone community in rural Queensland. A young and zealous indigenous officer named Jay Swan (Aaron Pedersen) arrives to investigate a missing person case. The case turns out to be far more complicated than he anticipated, with corruption and exploitation lurking around every corner. Along the way, he meets an immigration officer named Josh (Alex Russell), who reveals more about Goldstone than he ever thought possible.

As a sequel to director Ivan Sen’s 2013 film “Mystery Road,” “Goldstone” expands on what was already an incredibly cohesive cinematic universe. With breathtaking visuals and rich storytelling, Sen takes viewers on a winding journey through the Australian bush that manages to be both action-packed and thoughtful.

What I loved most about this movie is how distinctly Australian it is. From the stark and searing sunsets to the sparse dialects spoken by its characters, “Goldstone” captures all of the complexities that make up modern-day Australia. The audience can feel just how deep these cultural roots go as they watch Pedersen’s performance as Jay Swan, who serves as a powerful representation of Aboriginal people fighting back against colonialism.

Sen’s use of symbolism throughout “Goldstone” adds yet another layer of complexity to this already deeply emotional story. For example, when Jay Swan looks into his rearview mirror early in the film, he sees only endless dirt roads instead of what might appear behind him. This simple but highly effective moment emphasizes the isolation of these characters and the vastness of the land they must navigate.

The performances in “Goldstone” are nothing short of outstanding. Pedersen is phenomenal as Jay Swan, slipping effortlessly into the role of a conflicted and determined man who is fighting for justice against all odds. In contrast, Russell’s portrayal of Josh feels like the perfect foil to Jay’s brooding intensity: he is confident, charming, and disarmingly frank.

With its rich storytelling and stunning visuals, “Goldstone” has earned critical acclaim and a legion of dedicated fans. It was nominated for multiple awards at the Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts Awards in 2017, securing wins for Best Cinematography and Best Sound.

From its breathtaking score to its compelling acting to its beautifully realized cinematography, “Goldstone” truly has it all. It’s a film that deserves to be ranked among the greatest Australian movies ever made–and one that no movie buff should miss.
