Review

It is a truth universally acknowledged that the world of cinema offers numerous tales of different genres and tastes. One such tale that caught my attention lately is Attack of the 50 Foot Cheerleader. This film is quite different in its approach, as it combines humor, horror, and science-fiction. Directed by Kevin O’Neill and produced by Roger Corman’s wife, Julie Corman, Attack of the 50 Foot Cheerleader is a film that will leave you astounded.

The storyline follows Cassie Stratford (Jena Sims), a college student who wants to impress her biology professor with her research project. To do this, she ingests an experimental serum created by her professor’s assistant, which turns Cassie into a giantess. The plot thickens as Cassie tries to find a cure for her condition while battling with the shady figures who want to use her as a weapon.

The movie is quite interesting in its own way. It’s somewhat like watching an old sci-fi horror film but with cheesy dialogue and modern-day special effects. Attack of the 50 Foot Cheerleader has a unique charm that can only be explained by watching it firsthand.

Cassie Stratford, played by Jena Sims, is an ambitious college student who dreams big about becoming a cheerleading captain. Her character triples in size after taking the serum and turns into a monstrous form resembling Godzilla’s cousin – with an attitude! Although it might sound scary at first glance, Jena Sims pulls off both versions of Cassie masterfully.

The movie features some other standout characters like Jett Moody (Sean Young), Cassie’s former coach-turned-nemesis who tries to kill her when she becomes too powerful; and Viktor (Ryan Merriman), Cassie’s love interest who helps her find the cure for her condition.

The story’s setting takes place on Redview University’s campus where Cassie navigates college life while dealing with becoming an abnormally large and powerful creature. We also see glimpses of life off-campus which includes Cassie’s apartment, Jett Moody’s home, and the laboratory where the serum was developed.

Attack of the 50 Foot Cheerleader is a B-movie at its very best. It does not pretend to be anything other than what it is – an entertaining and silly movie that does not take itself too seriously. The film’s writers, Mike MacLean and Jake Matthews, knew what they were creating and leaned into the tropes of classic science-fiction to create a story that is both familiar yet unique.

Unfortunately, Attack of the 50 Foot Cheerleader did not receive many accolades from critics. However, despite being overlooked by some critics, it gained a cult following for those who appreciate its humor and quirkiness.

The movie score composed by John Lissauer adds to the overall experience of Attack of the 50 Foot Cheerleader. The music has a fun ‘80s vibe coupled with tense moments that help accentuate scenes when necessary.

The production team did an outstanding job bringing this film to life on-screen. The special effects are impressive for a B-movie budget with Cassie towering over buildings and cars as she tries to navigate through her adventures. The filming also captures all the necessary angles needed to make Cassie appear larger than life without compromising on the story’s continuity.

The movie’s dialogue is something that stands out as quite cheesy but fitting in its own way. Some notable lines include Cassie saying: “I feel like Godzilla’s sister” while chasing down her love interest Viktor; or when Jett Moody argues with Cassie, saying: “You’re just an out-of-control high school fantasy.” It shows how even in comedic moments; writers can drive home important plot points.

The crew’s efforts are highlighted by their attention to detail in bringing this monster cheerleading story to life that seems both believable and ridiculous simultaneously. This B-movie is not to be missed if you love witty humor, horror movies, and science-fiction flicks.

In conclusion, Attack of the 50 Foot Cheerleader may not be a classic film like Gone with the Wind or Citizen Kane. However, it has made its mark as a fun and entertaining movie that does justice to the classic sci-fi genre. Despite being overlooked by some critics, it has amassed a cult following amongst those who appreciate its charm and uniqueness. If you are someone who enjoys movies that don’t take themselves too seriously, this is one film that should be on your watchlist.
